Since 31 March 2025, Graph API changes rolled out by Microsoft as part of their Secure Future Initiative have affected Redstor’s ability to backup and restore OneNote Class Notebooks.

Additionally, subsequent changes rolled out by Microsoft to the Graph API have been impacting OneNote standard notebooks since 1 May 2025. These changes have affected all backup vendors using the Graph APIs for OneNote files.

We have made several improvements in order to mitigate these issues, and work now continues to improve the support for OneNote documents within our Microsoft 365 product set.

Teams (OneNote Class Notebooks)

• Previously

  • Backup: Class Notebooks are backed up as a folder with standard notebooks.

  • Restore: Native restore fails. InstantData can be used to access data as a folder with standard notebooks.

• Latest release (23 May 2025)

  • Restore: Restore excludes Class Notebooks from restores. Restore status recorded as completed with warnings. Class Notebooks can be accessed/recovered via InstantData as a folder with standard notebooks.

• Further proposed changes  

  • Restore: Restore status recorded as successful. 

OneDrive (OneNote Class Notebooks)

• Currently

  • Backup: Class Notebooks backed up before Microsoft's changes continue to be backed up. New Class Notebooks are backed up as a folder with standard notebooks.

  • Restore: Restore is successful. Restore status recorded as completed with warnings. Class Notebooks restored as a folder with standard notebooks.

• Proposed changes  

  • Restore: Restore status recorded as successful. 

OneDrive (OneNote notebooks) and Teams (OneNote notebooks)

• Previously

  • Backup: Notebooks backed up before Microsoft's changes continue to be backed up. Backups of new notebooks are failing.

  • Restore: Restores are successful. Restore status recorded as completed with warnings.

• Latest release (23 May 2025)

  • Backup: All notebooks are backing up. Backup status recorded as completed with warnings.

• Further proposed changes  

  • Backup: Backup status recorded as successful.

Teams (Teams channel messages)

• Previously

  • Restore: Teams channel messages OneNote file not being generated. Teams channel message data can be accessed/recovered via InstantData as a folder with JSON files.

• Latest release (8 September 2025)

  • Restore: Single items are recovered to a newly created, separate "Channels" team. Contents of class team in Teams for Education are restored into two separate teams ("Channels" team and "Class" team). Class Notebooks can only be recovered via InstantData as a folder with standard notebooks. See Article 1321. Restore of private channels temporarily disabled.
